About

My name is Ariel Pontes. I got a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from PUC-Rio, in 2013, and I currently work as a back-end web development in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. In my free time though, I like to change the subject a bit and work on promoting secular ethics, human rights and social progress in general. One of the ways in which I do it is by writing this on blog. I am also a member of the Secular Humanist League of Brazil (LiHS) and of the Romanian Secular-Humanist Association  (ASUR) and get involved in their activities when possible.

This blog was originally created in 2007 to facilitate discussions with close friends but it is open for anyone to comment. It includes personal thoughts and arguments about philosophy, science, religion, evolutionary biology and society overall, but I try my best to write informative texts, with links and references so that it is clear what my premisses are based on. The blog is written within a rationalist paradigm. That is, it relies on the premisse that any belief/opinion should be based on reason, as opposed to faith.

From 2013 to 2014, many of texts were also published in the Brazilian organization Sociedade Racionalista, where I volunteered as writer and editor, and can be accessed (in portuguese) at sociedaderacionalista.org/author/ariel. I am also a collaborator at Bule Voador, LiHS’s official blog.
